A cat, who ran five times into a burning building to save her babies, is honored

As parents, we know we would do anything to protect our children, our desire to keep them safe comes before our own safety and well-being. A mother cat found herself in a deadly situation when she rescued her kittens from a burning building.

When firefighters were called to a garage fire in Brooklyn, they noticed the heroic cat carrying her kittens one by one out of the burning building.

She returned to the burning building five times to save her babies, and after carrying them to safety, she touched each of their noses to make sure they were still alive.

The cat, later named Scarlett, then collapsed after her heroic rescue. According to an account on imgur, firefighter David Giannelli spotted the brave cat saving her kittens.

“Scarlett herself had been badly burned trying to pull her kittens out of the fire. His eyes were blistered shut, his ears and paws burned, and his coat badly scorched,” it read.

“After rescuing the kittens, she was seen touching each of her kittens with her nose to make sure they were all there and alive, as the blisters on her eyes made it hard to see them, then she collapsed, unconscious.”

Brooklyn firefighters were able to put out the fire and get Scarlett and her babies treated. Unfortunately, one of her babies did not survive, but the others were cared for and found forever homes.

Her story has garnered worldwide media attention and has even been the subject of several books written about her, including “Scarlett Saves her Family” and “The Bravest Cat”.

Scarlett was adopted by a family in Brooklyn and lived 12 happy, loving years until her death in 2008. An award was even named in her honor by the North Shore Animal League, who cared for Scarlett and her kittens, to honor other heroic animals.
