Five California friends have photographed themselves together at Lake Copco for 40 years, sitting in the same order every five years, with empty cans and hats and repeating this image. Neither the pandemic nor the men with cancer have stopped them from continuing that tradition this year.
Here are nine photos of five young men transformed into real adults, taken by Californians between 1982 and 2022.
“You get a little older and a little heavier. Behind this bench is a 9 m high cliff. One day, we heard a crack and it scared us,” they say.
The four friends are now 59 and Rumer Cleary 58.
