Over the weekend, while driving on a freezing night in Ontario, Canada, a Good Samaritan spotted something that caused her to stop.
There, curled up on the side of a snowy road, was a shivering stray dog.
But she was not alone.
Although the dog could have found a safer place to spend the night, she wasn’t just thinking about herself.
Closer examination revealed the sweet pup had wrapped herself around five orphaned kittens, whom she was cuddling for warmth in the biting temperatures.
The Good Samaritan, in turn, rescued them all from the freezing night by taking them to the Pet Shelter and Wildlife Rescue. But by then, an incredible bond between the dog and the kittens had already formed.
For rescue personnel, learning about the circumstances of this case made one thing clear: the puppy had saved the lives of the kittens.
“It’s really heartwarming!” a spokesperson for the shelter told Au Dodo. “The night had been very cold, so these kittens would have had a very hard time surviving.”
The kittens are now safe, but require treatment for flea and worm infestations. Meanwhile, the sweet stray who saved them insists on monitoring their progress with regular visits — much like a proud mother.
It’s still unclear where the dog or kittens originally came from, or if they knew each other before that night. Pet and Wildlife Rescue hopes an owner will come forward to claim them, but if not, they will be put up for adoption.
Thanks to this brave pup, however, a sad ending for the kittens turned into a happy ending.
“Our staff see many difficult situations daily and stories like this make every heartache worth it,” the shelter said.
