Rescue beagle has the happiest reaction to touching the grass for the very first time

Over the past few weeks, thousands of beagles have been rescued from a life of misery and heartbreak after the Virginia breeding facility that housed them closed. The Humane Society worked to relocate them.

Among the dogs who got a fresh start is this sweet pup named Sami. Like all rescued dogs, she had spent her entire life deprived of the most basic joys of being a puppy.

But now everything has changed.
Last Thursday, Karen Shrader and her family volunteered to open their home to Sami, taking him in as a foster dog. It was clear from the start that Sami wasn’t used to kindness, or to the fact that the world isn’t always a scary place.

“The first day she was very shy, but she asked for a dog bed in our family room,” Shrader told The Dodo. “She only ventured a few feet from the bed.”

Soon after, however, Sami discovered the grassy backyard. Now she could touch the grass for the very first time in her life.

And this was his reaction:

“Saturday she was zooming and chasing bullets,” Shrader said.

Sami was ecstatic.

In the breeding facility, she had missed so much happiness. Now she has everything.

Within days, Sami went from a sad and shy dog to a happy and playful puppy. For Shrader, it was a real pleasure to see his foster dog flourish.

“It warms my heart to know that she left a place where she couldn’t be a dog and now enjoys the freedom to run, play and feel the loving touch of a human. !”Srader said. “She has received love from my family and she gives us so much joy!”

Shrader hopes Sami’s story will help inspire more people to consider fostering these beagles, or help by donating to the Humane Society (more on this can be found here).

In the end, however, for Shrader and his family, being Sami’s foster parents just didn’t work out as planned.

“She won our hearts. We adopt it!” Shrader said. “Yes, I am a school failure!”
