Donkey Abandoned by Mother Finds Loving New Family at Sanctuary

Life was anything but easy for this little colt, after being rejected by his own mother shortly after birth. But luckily he was not alone. Surrounded by love and affection, the hopeless baby donkey overcame the difficult situation and turned the odds in his favor, having found a loving new mother!

Ben’s mother was already pregnant when she arrived at the Donkey Sanctuary in the UK. With only a few months left until she was due to give birth, the mare named Millie was far from ready to be a mum. Unfortunately, despite the staff’s best efforts to prepare her for what would have followed, it just wasn’t meant to be. And shortly after the birth, she rejected her baby!

“The mare and her baby were not together or showed any signs of the bonding process that would normally take place,” the sanctuary wrote. “We carefully tried to encourage her to accept it, but this inexperienced young mum just wouldn’t let her foal around – it was clear she had rejected him.”

For a newborn animal, the chances of survival are extremely slim without a mother and it was nothing but the same. But the dedicated people at the sanctuary did their best to keep the little colt alive, and they finally succeeded. They bottle-fed him at 3-4 hours, and spend a lot of time with him, making him feel comfortable and loved. But despite everything, little Ben needed someone to be there for him at all times, to keep him warm and protected, and only a mother can do that.

Since his mother was not on the table, the staff decided to introduce Ben to “aunt” Jingle, another mare at the sanctuary. To everyone’s surprise, it didn’t take too long for the two to become inseparable. Everyone involved was more than happy to see that Ben finally found a loving mother. After everything he had been through, he really deserved it!
