Meet the Malabar Giant Squirrel, the Squirrel So Colorful People Can’t Believe It Really Exists

No one thinks squirrels are particularly exotic or interesting animals. Now search your garden and you might find one. But step into an Indian forest and you might find a squirrel that will take your breath away. Granted, these animals aren’t tree-climbing squirrels, but they’re so colorful it’s hard to believe they’re real.

You can see their unique fur in a variety of shades, from brown and orange to red-purple, which is rare among mammals. You might think the bright colors have the downside of getting them noticed by strangers, but it actually helps them survive.

Squirrel expert John Koprowski says, “In the shady subsoil of dense forests, variegated colors and dark tones are an excellent adaptation for avoiding detection. “But when seen in sunlight, they show their ‘true colors’ and beautiful plumage.

They are not only the most colorful squirrels in the world, they are also the largest. Their head and body grow from 10 inches to 1 ft 8 inches, and their tail is even longer. It is a pleasure to observe them, but it is extremely difficult to find one in the wild. They live in Indian forests, jumping from tree to tree and rarely touching the ground. They are also known to be quite shy.

Its population is currently increasing and is listed as ‘least concern’ on the IUCN Red List, but it could be threatened with extinction due to deforestation if no action is taken. However, according to John Koprowski, these squirrels always find a way to survive.

They have a wide range of species and seem to be able to tolerate human presence and low-density development, he says.

Wow, what a beautiful animal. I had no idea squirrels could be so gorgeous. If you love this giant squirrel, please share this story.
